The modern conveniences rarely encourage us to take physical efforts.
Plush cars, escalators, elevators etc tempt us to walk less. Even the
remote does not make you to get up and change the channels on your TV.
Therefore, our body gets tuned to less physical efforts, and does not
offer outlet to burn the calories which we accumulate due to lack of
physical activity. Naturally, our weight tends to increase.
Due to busy lifestyle, we do not find the time and energy to go to a
ground to take exercise. We do not find time or inclination to eat a
nutritious meal, but we tend to pick up fast junk food on the run, which
adds to the existing problem. When one finds his/her weight beyond
limits, a knee jerk reaction is to join a gym or a weight loss program.
These methods may not be suitable for everybody.
But, everyone wishes that he/she should have a trim body with toned
muscles and weight within limits. Here is how one can keep the weight in
control even in a hectic life style.
1. As much physical activity as possible: If you have a sitting job,
whenever you have spare moments, move your arms vigorously on all sides.
Stretch you legs below the table and try to bring the knees together
towards you, as many times as possible. Try to walk around your office
as much as possible.
2. Food: As a rule, eat only when you are really hungry. Ask yourself a
question 'am I really hungry now?’ Answer truthfully to yourself. If you
are not really hungry, do not eat. Whenever you feel your stomach
grumbling, try to eat vegetable salads and fruits. The trick is that you
should not starve; otherwise you will feel gloomy at work. So, eating
plenty of fruits and vegetables in different varieties is ideal. If you
eat too much junk food at a party one evening, make sure that you do not
eat the next day. Instead of eating two full stomach meals per day, try
to have five small meals per day.
3. Drink as much water as possible. Begin your day with one tall glass
of water. Drink at least three litres of water every day. Drink fruit
juices in plenty.
4. Know your body well: You should know exactly which type of food will
give you acidity, how much quantity will make you dull, what is the best
time for you to eat so that you do not have chest burns etc. You are
your best physician and dietician. Draw your eating timetable in the way
which is best for you, which is best suited to your working environment,
your age, and your habits.
Remember, keeping your weight in control is a function of many factors,
which are interdependent on each other. Do not exercise any single
factor in isolation. This means do not just take lot of exercise, do not
just drink plenty of water, or do not just starve yourself. Use a
judicious mixture of all the factors which will give you enough energy
to carry out your routine activities, and at the same time, will keep
you trim.
You may find that you need not visit any gym after all.
